569. Netherlands windmill

Fusha Fusha 2 The left is a windmill close to the Inba marsh taken yesterday.

Strong wind makes the blades fully rotate with their skeltons only, without canvas, and the mill drives the waterwheel at its foot and pumps up the water.

=2022-03-05 fri canon ps sx40hs=

The right is a picture showing its overall structure as well as the mechanism to shift the mill direction.

The head structure including 27.5 m diameter blades, their holding structure, main gear, etc. is placed on the conical tower top with 24 pieces of rollers in between.

The major mechanism to shift the mill direction is a frame of a large inverted triangle with a horizontal bar sticking out from the head structure as a side. There are two such frames. The apexes of the triangles at the lower side are connected together to the lower tip of a main beam which also comes down from the head structure.

In this connected point, a winding mechanism resembling an old ship's steering wheel and a work platform on which a mill guard rides are fixed. Thus the large two inverted triangle frames with their hypotenuses of more than 10 m and the work platform are just to be hanging from the head structure.

The steering wheel is to wind a chain which is connected to the anchors evenly embedded into the ground around the tower foot.

When shifting the mill direction, a mill guard rides on the platform and turns the wheel to pull the chain and let the platform itself with him come closer to an anchor. As a result, the windmill direction shifts.

Considering the mill size and weight, this looks a bold design, even almost reckless.

This, however, is a design finally attained in the Nethrelands with repeated improvements since the 13th century, so to speak, a withered technology with hundreds of years of operations. Not anything a layman worries about. Hat off!

567. Yayoi March

Saka-miti FINALLY, March has come. The name "Yayoi" is based on the old lunar calendar, and still too early to mention. Anyway, it will not matter much.

The photo is today's look of a slope I often walk. Though it might be just because of the calendar, I feel spring in the air.

566. Jyou-bitaki

Jyoubitaki A jyou-bitaki at the foot of a tulip tree in a nearby square.

It is agile and not so photo friendly. However, this morning, probably because of the sever cold, it was staying still at a sunny spot of the square.

This bird makes mechanical sound, "kati, kati", rather than the usual singing. The sound resembles the one when striking a flint to creat a fire. Thus it is said that it got the name, "hi-taki" (make a fire).

As to the meaning of "jyou", there are several theories. One is the "jyou" from the Noh's "okina-men" (revered old man mask)*.

The bird's gray head with the bright yet reserved appearance looks to best fit that theory.

565. Kouzaki PA

Kouzaki PA A pile-driver under operation at the side of Kouzaki roadside-station. For the works of a parking area of Ken-ou road.

As the site is in a paddy field along the Tone-river, and looks considerably soft, long support piles exceeding 20 meters seem to be required.

Two stone tengu masks stand left and right at the foot of the torii. This is the karasu (crow) tengu situated at the right.

Ousugi jinjya The shrine is said to be the head of more than 600 Oo-sugi shrines in eastern Japan.

Many of the buildings are like the photo, reminding us of those at Nikkou.

For these, in my opinion, it is important that we invest a sizable money so that they do not look splendidly. Well, this might be out of fashion nowadays.

563. IT heavy industries

Tiba Inzai Substation A work site of Tokyo Power Grid. A substation under construction at Chiba New Town.

Said 600 MW. Being close to residential areas, I thought 60 MW. But it is 600 MW, and eventually 1000 MW!

=2022-02-03 thu sharp aquos sh-01l=

This seemingly unreasonable capacity is said to be for the power demand of data-centers under construction and planning.

Wondering if the so-called data-centers need so much power, I checked on-line and found that 18 MW is a common value for a single facility. The super computer, "Fugaku" of Fujitsu and Riken, for instance, is well known for its save-energy capability, but still needs 30 MW.

In this area, there are a lot of large buildings without windows. I can recognize those with frequent truck trafics as logistics facilities. But others have been unknown to me. Now it looks they are all data-centers.

Another dozens of such facilities are under construction or planning. 10 buildings need 180 MW and 50 need 900 MW. That makes sense.

Though they are all nice-looking facilities generally called "campus", their power demands are comparable to those of the heavy industries along the coast.

While wondering if the paper writes "Man εη",

a radio says "Man bou".

As noted earlier, our ancesters have made strenuous efforts to do without Chinese characters in writings since the Heian period. Still a long way off, even after 1,000 years. The above awkward writing and saying are a part of the long-lasting confusion.

We are not alone in agonizing over the spell of Chinese characters. Vietnam and ROK both abolished them, and have ironically faced with different issues.

It is reported that simple changes of the ideogram pronunciation into the phonogram bring about perilous side-effects. This will be the natural and anticipated result. Especially, deep understanding of abstract concept must be hampered for generations.

Even the modifications with good intention can result in suffering from their adverse effects, it might be better, in langauges, just to leave as they changes by themselves.

Yet, it might be not so bad idea to dare to attend this 1,000-year-long war. Thus, my first step is to return to the original local words, as shown below.

This must be the rehearsal for the annual "paratroop first descent of the year".

The involved aircraft usually make u-turns just before the route 16 after dropping the paratroopers at Narasino. and do not come to our place. However, on occasions, some come to this area.

USAF's latest J-type. Looks the US army attends tomorrow's new-year event.

Though the public attendance is suspended this year too, the descending drill of the paratroop is said to be carried out.
